Deadline for submission of entries for the USS Colorado Ship’s Crest Design Contest has been extended by about two weeks until midnight March 16th. We are extending the deadline in order to allow more time for our public relations efforts take effect.

Welcome to USS Colorado (SSN-788) Commissioning Committee web site. USS Colorado (SSN-788) is the 15th Virginia Class submarine. She was delivered to the Navy on September 21, 2017. Having completed shakedown operations, she was commissioned on March 17, 2018 at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, CT. The Committee's purposes are to promote awareness within the state, provide support for the crew, and to help organize and raise money for the events surrounding commissioning.
On January 2nd the USS Colorado License Plate went on sale at all Department of Motor Vehicles offices in the state. State Senator Bernie Herpin, sponsor of the license plate bill, was the first person in the state to get one. Since the plate is a “Print on Demand” type, you will receive a temporary tag at the DMV and the final plate will arrive in your mail about two weeks later.
Committee members, John (JJ) Mackin, Dick Cooper and John O’Donnell visited Cogitic Corporation in Colorado Springs. There they met with company owners, brothers Jared and Jonathan Veteto to discuss partnership and sponsorship for USS Colorado. The company is a small business specializing in precision manufacturing for a variety of clients. They manufacture a number of Subsafe/Level 1 and Nuclear parts for submarines including Virginia Class. Some of the parts the Committee saw were specialized ball valves, shaft seals and Virginia Class Hatch Locking Rings. The owners were very enthusiastic about supporting the USS Colorado project and we look forward to working with them in the future. The pictures show Virginia Class Hatch Locking Rings in production.
November 10th marked the kickoff of the Ship’s Crest Design Contest. This contest, sponsored by the Commissioning Committee, seeks entries in two divisions for candidate designs for the ship’s crest. The winners will be determined by the Commanding Officer. See the full description.
Today our Committee has started publishing a recurring newsletter. Our intention is to provide periodic updates about our activities as well as news about the ship’s construction and the crew. We will be sending the newsletter out via email.
